Switches – basics

  • SSH vs Telnet – telnet plaintext including passwds, ssh encrypts everything
  • Memory types
    • RAM – running config
    • ROM – bootstrap
    • NVRAM – startup config
    • Flash – IOS image / backups / other files
  • CLI modes
    • User mode – show commands (non breakable commands, show mac-address-table)
    • Enable mode – commands affecting device / configs etc. (reload command)
    • Global configuration mode – issueing configuration commands
      • Specific configuration mode (interface, vlan, vty etc.) – commands specific for the configuration
  • CLI shortcuts and commands
    • exit – moves up one level
    • end / CTRL+Z – moves to user mode
